Prabhu Mahan (How Great Thou Art)

Psalm 145:3 Great is the Lord and worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.

About the Song

How Great Thou Art was my granny's favorite hymn. I remember recording a video in Zimbabwe on my first overseas mission trip in college, listening to the worshippers sing this familiar hymn in their local language. I played that video for her and it warmed her heart so much. I have found such connection with people of other cultures when we know the same song, but in a different language. It was my desire to include this song on the album, sung in Hindi.

This album includes songs in both Hindi and English, so that people of both languages can understand and be encouraged by the message in the songs. The message of the hymn is simple but so important, that our God is Great. Again, I wanted to emphasize with these girls that the One True God is Great, above all other gods. He greatly surpasses everything we can ever imagine or create with our own hands, like the Hindu idols.

There were about 50 girls who sang on this album, with a combination of solos, small groups, and the large group. All 50 girls are singing on this song which makes it a wonderful, full song of praise to our Great God. You can also hear some native Indian instruments like the table (a pair of small hand drums attached together), and the sitar (a plucked stringed instrument).

About the Girls

At the time of production, the girls on the album were all middle school aged. Most of the girls in the hostel do not speak English well, so for the English songs we spent a good deal of time on pronunciateion and meaning. They attend a local Hindi medium school and spend the rest of the time in the hostel, where they have additional tutoring classes, as well as some extra classes like tailoring and cosmetology. They work together to keep the hostel clean as well as help the staff with meal preparations and serving food to one another. They have daily devotions and Bible time, and attend a local church. Vinita Shaw of Disha Foundation regularly spends time discussing difficult, life issues with the older girls related to life as a woman in India and how they can make a difference in their community and country. They have a beautiful playground, small library, basic computer room, and basic sewing room. The hostel is functional, but there is always a need for more funding to help with basic things, such as healthier food and improving facilities. If you feel led to donate to help with the daily needs of the hostel, please contact me or Disha Foundation directly.

The My God Will Hear Me album is available at many online stores and streaming services. All profits for purchased music goes to Disha Foundation to support the girls.
