God is Good to Me

About the Song
I started writing this song in 2008 when my 3-week old daughter was intubated in the ICU, very sick with RSV and pneumonia. I was completely helpless and had to rely on God and the doctors to know how to care for her. She was so tiny, new, fragile, and sick. At the worst of her illness, I feared for her life. The dramatic way the hospital staff responded when I brought her to the emergency room confirmed my worst fears. It was quite traumatic, watching them snatch my limp baby, rush her to a bed and start cutting the clothes off of her little body in order to quickly diagnose the problem. Several doctors and nurses were running from all directions to my baby and began frantically working together to help her. A kind doctor turned to me and calmly said, "Please just give us a few minutes to figure out what's going on and then we will talk to you."
Everything seemed to move in slow motion as I sat in a chair outside of her ER cubicle, the voices of the several doctors and nurses blurring together as they quickly and precisely gave instructions to each other. As I was in a bit of shock, I remember vividly what thought came to my mind on replay, "God is good, God is good, God is good right now." The "right now" is what stuck out to me. Even in the middle of a health crisis and coming close to losing a child, God was still good in that moment. I believed that, rested my heart in that, and He is what helped me through that time.
This song has always been very special to me and I wanted to share it with these girls. I wanted them to know that even in the hard times, God is good. Even when circumstances are beyond difficult and hopeless, God is good. It is so important for our well-being to trust in this truth. God has proved himself faithful time and time again throughout history, and we need to believe in and rest in his goodness.
These girls come from very difficult circumstances, and most continue to experience daily challenges when they leave. But I have seen them experience the joy and beauty of Christ. The twinkle in their eyes is hard to miss. They are lights that will change their dark communities. Pray for them as they interact with their families and neighbors back in their homes and slums. Many of them are the only ones with any sort of knowledge of the true God in their families and communities. Pray for their protection from the evil one and from those seeking to harm them. These girls are precious and I am confident God has big plans for each of them.
About a Girl
Nina was one of the older girls on the album at the time of production. She was always full of energy, talkative, and had a big, warm smile. She was a strong leader, though small in stature. A little fireball, really! Nina and I had several conversations about her relationship with the Lord. I could tell that she was a deep thinker, and I was confident that she would be a very bright light to her community.
Nina is older now and has moved out of the hostel. Her family recently presented her with an opportunity for an arranged marriage to an Indian Hindu man living in the United States. While for most Indian women, this would be an incredible opportunity, Nina told her family she would not accept the offer. Instead, she wanted to pursue further education and learn to support herself before entering into marriage. I pray that she continues to put her hope and trust in the Lord as she walks an unusual and bold path for someeone from her background, but one I am confident the Lord will bless as he guides her.
